To rebuild or not to rebuild....
There has been a lot of talk about whether or not New Orleans should be rebuilt and in what format - as a port only, a full-blown city with a better system of protection from this kind of catastrophe, or a city built somewhere else that isn't quite so prone to flooding. Yes, these questions need to be asked. But do we really need statements like this when there are people still living in the hell on Earth that NOLA has become?
It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans.
Right now, it doesn't matter what he really meant by the statement (according to the article, his press secretary clarified his remarks). Nor does it matter what others who have made similar statements really meant either. There will be plenty of time to sit down and ask the hard questions and to figure out the hows and whys of rebuilding New Orleans and other devastated areas of the Gulf.
Do I think New Orleans should be rebuilt? I'm undecided at this moment as to how it should happen. I think about that later. But what I think really doesn't matter - happen it will, in one form or another. Early, when visiting this website, I remembered a quote from a favorite movie of mine. As Admiral Kirk said in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, "I don't believe in the no-win scenario." What an American statement, for throughout much of her history, this country has shown that it doesn't believe in the no-win scenario either.
